General Questions

  • Q: Do Happy Family products contain any synthetic colors or flavors?

A: No. Happy Family products never contain any synthetic colors or flavors.

  • Q: Are all Happy Family products organic?

A: Yes! All of our products are USDA certified organic.

  • Q: Where do you source your ingredients from?

A: We source all of our fruits, vegetables, and grains from trusted organic farms, many of which are located right here in the United States! However, depending on growing seasons, we’ll source ingredients from other countries. We hold each and every one of our partners to the same strict standards and carefully source each one of our ingredients.

To find out exactly where our ingredients come from, check out HappyFarms.com.

  • Q: Where are Happy Family products made?

A: All (except for two) of our products are made in the U.S.: Happy Baby Rice Cakes are made in the Netherlands, and Happy Baby Gentle Teethers are made in Thailand. Both of these products go through the same strict auditing as those made in our U.S. facilities.

  • Q: How do you test your products?

A: As parents ourselves, we take the safety of our products very seriously. Our Quality Assurance team analyzes every batch of every one of our products. Each product is tested to make sure that they meet our strict standards and are safe for every baby, toddler, and adult to consume.

  • Q: What is Happy Family doing to minimize contaminants in our food?

A: Happy Family’s Quality and Food Safety program includes measures that help us prevent contamination by any harmful toxins. Notably, we require our suppliers to meet strict standards, validate performance through active monitoring, and proactively execute improvement projects based on areas of potential risk. To take this one step further, we are currently developing an even stricter set of standards to push the industry to an even safer place.

  • Q: How are Happy Family Recipes created?

A: Because we’re parents too, we live the reality and understand the needs of today’s families. We are also driven by the long-term health and safety of children. Happy Family products are created in collaboration by our research and development (R&D) team, and with partners like registered dietitians, nutritionists, lactation consultants, and medical professionals.

  • Q: Does any Happy Family packaging contain BPA or phthalates?

A: All Happy Family packaging is made without the use of BPA or phthalates.

  • Q: How does Happy Family commit to being a socially responsible company?

A: Beyond our mission to change the trajectory of children’s health through nutrition, we are proud to be a socially responsible company. We have proudly been a certified B Corp since 2011, which means we meet rigorous third-party standards that measure our social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.

In 2017, not only did we become a Public Benefit Corporation—which means we legally updated our charter to reflect our commitment to a better world—we won the Best for the World: Changemakers Award, which is given to businesses that best exceed the high social and environmental standards set for B Corporations. We recognize the importance of leaving the world a better place for all children, and we give back to both people and the planet. To learn more about our efforts, check out our 2016 Mission Report.

Pouches

  • Q: What are the pouches made of?

A: Our foil pouches are made from multi-layer films produced without the use of BPA or phthalates. The outer layers are polyethylene blends designed for durability and printability. The middle layer is a bonded aluminum layer for moisture and vapor impermeability. The inner layer (the only layer that touches the food) is bonded virgin food-grade polyethylene. The food cannot contact the middle aluminum layer.

Our Clearly Crafted pouches are made from an outer polyethylene blend coated with aluminum oxide, a middle plastic layer, and an inner layer of food-grade polyethylene. The inner layer is the only portion that has direct food contact and is made with a commonly-used, food-safe plastic.

  • Q: Are the pouches recyclable?

A: Unfortunately, our pouches are not recyclable at this time. Although our pouches cannot be recycled, they do offer numerous environmental benefits over other packaging alternatives. From raw materials to transportation to your local store, pouches with flexible packaging like ours require less energy and fewer raw materials to produce, and generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions than the alternatives. Despite these benefits, we are still concerned about the recyclability of our pouches and are continually working to improve. We are active members of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition’s flexible film recovery working group and OSC2’s packaging collaborative to identify a solution to make pouch recyclability possible.

  • Q: If there is a tear or puncture in the pouch (caused by a box cutter or damage during transit), will the food be spoiled?

A: If a tear or puncture is found in the pouch, please discard and do not consume as we cannot guarantee the quality of the product. If you notice this, please let us know and we would be happy to replace it for you! Please email us here: parents@happyfamilybrands.com or feel free to give us a call at 1-855-64-HAPPY.

Canisters (Bellies, Munchies: Cheese and Veggie Snacks, Puffs)

  • Q: Is the cereal canister recyclable?

A: The plastic colored cap is #4 and recyclable in most U.S. cities. The can itself is made from 100% post-consumer recycled content, but the foil lining makes it difficult to recycle. Only a few regions will accept the foil-lined cans into the metal recycling stream, so check with your local municipality.

  • Q: Is the Munchies canister recyclable?

A: The plastic colored cap is #4 and is recyclable in most U.S. cities. The can itself is made from 100% post-consumer recycled content, but the foil lining makes it difficult to recycle. Only a few regions will accept the foil-lined cans into the metal recycling stream, so check with your local municipality.

  • Q: Is the Puffs canister recyclable?

A: The Puffs canister is made from #2 HDPE plastic, and the lid is #5 Polypropylene; both are recyclable in most U.S. cities. Please remove and dispose of the outer label by tearing along the perforated line before recycling, as they prohibit the canister from being properly recycled.

  • Q: Are the Infant Formula & Toddler Milk tubs recyclable?

A: The tub is made from #2 HDPE plastic, and the lid is made from #5 Polypropylene. Both are recyclable in most U.S. cities. Please rinse and dry the container before recycling.

  • Q: Are the Happy Tot Super Morning and Love My Veggie Meal bowls recyclable?

A: The meal bowls are made from #5 Polypropylene, and the outer sleeves are made from paperboard made with 65% post-consumer recycled content. The bowls are recyclable in most U.S. cities. Please rinse and dry the container before recycling.

  • Q: Are the Clearly Crafted Jars recyclable?

A: The Clearly Crafted Jars are 100% recyclable.

  • Q: Are the Happy Tot and Happy Baby Yogurt Cups recyclable?

A: Our Happy Tot and Happy Baby Yogurt cups are made from #6 polystyrene plastic. This type of plastic is recyclable but there are limited recycling centers, so check locally before placing your yogurt cups in the bin.

  • Q: What’s the purpose of the plastic bag around the teethers?

A: Our facility requires the plastic bag to transport the teethers from the first stage of packaging to the final step, where the bag is placed in a box. Unfortunately, right now there is no way to eliminate the plastic bag. We are continuing to explore options, as we are committed to removing all unnecessary packaging from our products.

Stand-up Pouches and Individual sleeves (Yogis, Creamies, Rice Cakes, Clearly Crafted Cereal, Chickpea Straws, Dinos and Multigrain Alphabet Snacks, Gentle Teethers, Toddler, Kids and Happy Mama Bars)

  • Q: Is the packaging for these products recyclable?

A: Unfortunately, none of the packaging used for the above products is recyclable at this time. However, we are always innovating and looking for alternative packaging solutions.

Happy Baby & Happy Tot Pouches (Stages 1, 2, 3 & 4)

  • Q: Are Happy Baby and Happy Tot pouches allergy-friendly?

A: The majority of our Happy Baby and Happy Tot pouches are free from wheat, gluten, dairy, soy, and nuts. The exceptions are our Happy Tot Super Morning and Happy Tot Whole Milk Yogurt lines, which contain dairy. To see allergen details for all of our products, click here.

  • Q: What age range are the pouches formulated for?

A: We always suggest speaking to your pediatrician if you are unsure which stage your little one is ready for. Generally, we consider the following age ranges appropriate for these stages:

    • Happy Baby, Stage 1: Starting Solids
    • Happy Baby, Stage 2: 6+ months
    • Happy Baby, Stage 3: 7+ months
    • Happy Tot, Stage 4: 12+ months
    • Happy Squeeze: 3 - 13 years old

  • Q: How do Stage 4 pouches differ from Stage 1, 2, and 3 pouches?

A: Stage 4 pouches are formulated for the evolving needs of your little one starting around 12 months. From our experience, we know that it may get harder to get your toddler to eat vegetables at this age. Knowing this, we formulated our line of Love My Veggies pouches to include a full serving* of organic veggies. For a full list of the toddler products we offer, visit HappyFamilyOrganics.com/Tot. Additionally, our Happy Tot pouches are a slightly larger size (4.22oz, instead of 3.5oz or 4oz) than our Stage 1, 2, and 3 pouches. If you are still unsure which stage your little one is ready for, we suggest speaking to your pediatrician. *1 serving of veggies = ¼ cup

  • Q: What is the difference between the packaging for the clear pouches versus the opaque pouches?

A: The only difference is the packaging appearance. Both pouches keep the puree safe and tasting great as always.

  • Q: Why does the color differ among pouches of the same flavor?

A: There is natural variation in color among fruits and vegetables. Each individual fruit and vegetable brings their own characteristics and can sometimes vary slightly in color and taste, just like the variation you see amongst organic produce in the supermarket!

  • Q: Why is there sometimes a darker plug of puree in the spout of the pouch upon opening? Is this a food safety concern?

A: This is absolutely safe to consume and is not a food safety issue. After the pouch is filled with puree, it is exposed to heat for pasteurization for product safety. At that point, the puree in the spout is exposed to more heat, which can result in a color change and/or a thickening of the product.

If you have any other questions or would like us to look into the batch that you have, please email us at parents@happyfamilybrands.com or feel free to give us a call at 1-855-64-HAPPY. If you happen to have a photo and product specifics, that would be super helpful!

  • Q: Why is the texture different amongst pouches?

A: Some of our pouches include gluten-free organic oats, amaranth flour, or quinoa, and have a thicker consistency because of their grains.

  • Q: When I opened a pouch the puree seems clumpy and/or watery? Is this safe?

A: Here at Happy Family, we do not use any stabilizers or binders. Because of this, occasionally during the cold weather months, our pouches can freeze while they are distributed to your local store. When ingredients freeze—especially vegetables!—the water can separate out from the solid food, causing it to become chunky and watery. While these are completely safe to consume, they don’t always look very appetizing!

If you are experiencing this, please email us here: parents@happyfamilybrands.com or feel free to give us a call at 1-855-64-HAPPY.

  • Q: How long are the pouches good once opened?

A: If your little one does not eat directly from the pouch spout, you can save the pouch in the fridge for 2 days. If they do eat directly from the pouch, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. If you'd like to save it for longer, we suggest squeezing the puree into an ice cube tray and freezing it in individual servings.

  • Q: How should pouches be stored?

A: Our Happy Family fruit and veggie pouches can be stored at room temp until they have been opened. Our Happy Tot Whole Milk Yogurt pouches should always be refrigerated.

  • Q: How do I know if I have a defective pouch?

A: On the rare occasion that a pouch is defective, there are a couple of ways to know. If you notice any damage to the packaging, or packaging that seems overly inflated, please do not use the pouch. Also, if you happen to notice an “off” smell when opening the pouch, this could also be a sign that the pouch is defective or damaged. Please do not consume the pouch, as we cannot guarantee the quality.

If you notice any of these signs, please reach out to us at parents@happyfamilybrands.com so that we can get a bit more detail and share it with our team to further investigate. We typically look to collect the “best by” date and lot code, which can be found underneath the barcode on the back of our pouches.

  • Q: How are Happy Family pouched products preserved?

A: Our pouches are preserved by heat, packaging, and pH control. The purees are cooked to a target temperature to kill microbiological growth, then ingredients like lemon juice concentrate and/or ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) are added to lower the pH of the purees to a food safe range. The pouches also have an inner aluminum lining to protect the food inside. As a note, the food only contacts the inner food-grade polypropylene layer, and not the aluminum inner lining.

Happy Baby Yogurt & Happy Tot Yogurt

  • Q: Are Happy Baby and Happy Tot Yogurts allergy-friendly?

A: Our Happy Baby and Happy Tot Yogurts contain dairy. However, they are free of wheat, gluten, soy, and nuts. To see allergen details for all of our products, click here.

  • Q: Why can babies have yogurt around 6 months, when they can’t have cow’s milk until 12 months?

A: Yogurt can be introduced to Baby’s diet around 6 months. Although cow’s milk should not be introduced until 12 months, yogurt can be introduced earlier because the cultures found in yogurt break down the milk sugar, lactose, making it easier for baby to digest. Every baby develops differently, and it’s best to check with your pediatrician or healthcare provider regarding your child and their specific dietary needs, including sensitivities to milk and dairy products.

A bit more information from our Happy Mama Mentors:
Small amounts of yogurt and cheese are fine to give your baby before the age of one as long as your little one is tolerating dairy products. Milk in small amounts (such as when cooked in food) is also fine; however, cow’s milk should never substitute formula or breastmilk before age 1 as babies can’t digest cow’s milk completely, and the high concentration of proteins and minerals in cow’s milk can stress baby’s immature kidneys.

  • Q: What are probiotics and what do they do?

A: Probiotics are “friendly bacteria” that, when consumed regularly and in the right amounts, provide benefits for digestive health.

  • Q: How should our Happy Baby and Happy Tot Yogurts be stored?

A: Our Happy Baby and Happy Tot Yogurts should be stored in the refrigerator before enjoying. If your little one does not finish the pouch or cup, feel free to store the remainder in the fridge and consume within 24 hours.

  • Q: Can I freeze the yogurts?

A: While we recommend that for best results you use the yogurt fresh and by the best by date, it is possible to freeze the yogurt. The USDA recommends freezing yogurt for no more than 1-2 months. Note that if you do freeze the yogurt, the texture may change and some of the probiotics will no longer be active.

  • Q: Is it okay to eat the yogurt past its best by date?

A: We recommend eating the yogurt by its best by date.

  • Q: Which formula should I be using for my baby?

A: Our Stage 1, Stage 2, and Sensitive Formulas provide nutrient levels that are within the recommendation of the FDA and AAP for the first year of life, and the different formulations are tailored to fit baby’s unique needs. We realize that each feeding journey is different, and at times can be confusing—that’s why we have our Happy Mama Mentors, a team of dietitians certified in infant and maternal nutrition available to provide you with personalized support (chat live now*!). For specific information about which formula is tailored to fit your baby’s needs, check out more info here. *Support from our Happy Mama Mentors is not a substitute for medical advice from your doctor. If you have or suspect that you have a medical problem or condition, please contact your pediatrician or a doctor immediately. We provide basic lactation support and information; a consultation with an IBCLC is always recommended for complex or urgent breast-feeding issues. By chatting, you understand and agree to the Happy Family Privacy Policy.

  • Q: Are Happy Baby Organic Infant Formulas allergy-friendly?

A: Our Happy Baby Organic Infant Formulas contain dairy and soy. However, they are free of wheat, gluten, and nuts. To see allergen details for all of our products, click here.

  • Q: What is the whey to casein ratio in our Happy Baby Infant Formulas?

A: Our infant formulas have a 30:70 ratio of whey to casein.

  • Q: Does the formula contain any animal-derived vitamins or minerals?

A: The Vitamin D3 in our Happy Baby Infant Formulas is sourced from sheep’s wool (lanolin).

  • Q: Can you prepare a serving and store in the refrigerator? How long will it keep?

A: Yes, you can prepare formula in advance. Make sure to store prepared formula in the refrigerator and use it within 24 hours.

  • Q: What temperature water should you prepare the formula with?

A: We suggest preparing our formula with warm water (approximately 100F, or 40C). This temperature, which is just above room temp, will help to dissolve the formula properly. If the water is too cool, it will not mix properly.

    Stage 1 & 2 Formula

Sensitive Formula *Each scoop adds about 0.2 fl oz to the amount of prepared formula.

  • Q: Once opened, what is the container’s shelf life?

A: Once the canister has been opened, powdered formula can be used for one month. We don’t recommend using the formula after 30 days of opening, since the nutrients can start to degrade. If any water or moisture comes into contact with the formula, bacteria can begin to grow.

  • Q: Can you microwave the jars?

A: Yes! The jars can be microwaved. Since the lid is metal, make sure you remove it prior to microwaving. Additionally, make sure to stir and test the temperature prior to feeding to your little one, as the contents may be hot.

  • Q: How long can you save these in the refrigerator?

A: If you have not spoon-fed directly from the jar, you may save the remaining puree in the refrigerator for up to 3 days*. If you have spoon-fed directly from the jar, then you should not save the remaining puree because this could introduce bacteria from your little one’s mouth into the jar, which could cause bacterial contamination and growth. If you do not think your little one will consume an entire jar in one feeding, we suggest pouring a smaller quantity of the puree into a separate bowl.
*The Sweet Potato flavor must be used within 2 days.

  • Q: How are Happy Family jar products preserved?

A: Our jars are preserved by heat and pH control. The purees are cooked to a target temperature to kill microbiological growth, then ingredients like lemon juice concentrate and/or ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) are added to lower the pH of the purees to a food safe range.

Our Happy Baby Probiotic cereals do not contain milk or dairy. Furthermore, the line of probiotics is grown in a dairy-free environment.

  • Q: Does heating the cereal kill the probiotics?

A: Heating the cereal with a liquid hotter than 165 degrees will kill the probiotics. We suggest mixing the cereal with a warm liquid, such as breast milk, prepared formula, or water, which will not affect the probiotics.

A: Our Happy Tot Super Morning bowl does contain coconut oil, however, the coconut allergen protein is not present in the product.

  • Q: Why does the Banana & Strawberry oatmeal bowl seem thicker than the Apple & Blueberry flavor?

A: Apples and blueberries naturally have more water than bananas, making the consistency slightly different between the two different flavors. This can also vary due to the different raw fruits. Just like how one organic apple is different than the next, each batch of our fruits differ slightly!

  • Q: What are the larger, sometimes darker pieces in the oatmeal?

A: These are groats, the hulled kernels of the oat grain. If you see these, know that they are normal and part of our recipe.

A: You may heat the bowls before serving them, but you do not have to. Our Happy Tot Super Morning bowls can be enjoyed at room temperature. If you do heat the bowl, make sure to stir and test the temperature prior to feeding to your little one, as the contents may be hot.
